Job #5

The Legend of The Sleepy Hollow is more creepy, comical, has supernatural phenomenon (such as the headless horseman), is a much longer story, goes straight from the beginning to the end, and never really gives a definite resolution. An Occurrence on Owl Creek Bridge is much shorter, more deceptive when his fantasy is portrayed as reality, starts more in the middle of the story, then goes to the beginning and then to the end, and is more of a thriller. Overall, I believe they are both very different stories, which means Irving and  Bierce have very different writing styles. In my opinion, Bierce's story was much more exciting and attention-grabbing.

Job #4

How does Bierce's use of the flashback contribute to the effectiveness of the story?

Job #3

Acclivity - The other bank of the stream was open ground a gentle acclivity topped with a stockade of vertical tree trunks.

Undulations - They tore it away and thrust it fiercely aside, its undulations resembling those of a water-snake.

Preternaturally - They were indeed, Preternaturally keen and alert.

Intonation - How coldly and pitilessly with what an even, calm intonation, presaging, and enforcing tranquility in the men with what accurately measured intervals fell those cruel words.

Presaging - How coldly and pitilessly with what an even, calm intonation, presaging, and enforcing tranquility in the men with what accurately measured intervals fell those cruel words:

Job #2

This story is similar in a way to The Christmas Carol since both Scrooge and Farquhar were taken into a fantasy. In Scrooge's case he was shown what would happen if he didn't change and in Farquhar's he was seeing what he was hoping would happen.

Job #1

"As these thoughts , which have here to be set in down in words , were flashed into the doomed man's brain rather than evolved from it the captain nodded to the sergeant.  The sergeant stepped aside."(chapter 1)

This passage marks the end of the first section and also marks a turning point in the story just before farquhar falls to his death. The execution doesn't resume until the third section of the story so the author takes this time to explain farquhar's past. By portraying his thoughts as reality the end comes as even more of a surprise. This passage serves as a early indication of the surprise ending to come.
