Job #1

"As these thoughts , which have here to be set in down in words , were flashed into the doomed man's brain rather than evolved from it the captain nodded to the sergeant.  The sergeant stepped aside."(chapter 1)

This passage marks the end of the first section and also marks a turning point in the story just before farquhar falls to his death. The execution doesn't resume until the third section of the story so the author takes this time to explain farquhar's past. By portraying his thoughts as reality the end comes as even more of a surprise. This passage serves as a early indication of the surprise ending to come.
